  1. If the battery is charged and you get a light, you have to hold it almost against your skin. If it's more than 2 or 3 inches away it doesn't read. Self tests are hard to judge so I almost touch it to my skin. If not on the first try, try again to get it. It works pretty well as a thermometer and I still recommend it.
